Anomalous diffusion in fast cellular flows at intermediate time scales

چکیده
It is well known that on long time scales the behaviour of tracer particles diffusing in a cellular flow is effectively that of a Brownian motion. This paper studies the behaviour on “intermediate” time scales before diffusion sets in. Various heuristics suggest that an anomalous diffusive behaviour should be observed. We prove that the variance on intermediate time scales grows like O( √ t). Hence, on these time scales the effective behaviour can not be purely diffusive, and is consistent with an anomalous diffusive behaviour.

A Fast Immersed Boundary Fourier Pseudo-spectral Method for Simulation of the Incompressible Flows
Abstract The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to some other similar ...
متن کاملComment to the article by Michael J. Saxton: A biological interpretation of transient anomalous subdiffusion. I. qualitative model.
In a recent paper (1), Michael J. Saxton proposes to interpret as anomalous diffusion the occurrence of apparent transient sub-diffusive regimes in mean-squared displacements (MSD) plots, calculated from trajectories of molecules diffusing in living cells, acquired by Single Particle (or Molecule) Tracking techniques (SPT or SMT). The demonstration relies on the analysis of both three-dimension...
متن کاملAnalysis of passive scalar advection in parallel shear flows: Sorting of modes at intermediate time scales
The time evolution of a passive scalar advected by parallel shear flows is studied for a class of rapidly varying initial data. Such situations are of practical importance in a wide range of applications from microfluidics to geophysics. In these contexts, it is well-known that the long-time evolution of the tracer concentration is governed by Taylor’s asymptotic theory of dispersion. In contra...
متن کاملTime scales and species coexistence in chaotic flows
Empirical observations in marine ecosystems have suggested a balance of biological and advection time scales as a possible explanation of species coexistence. To characterise this scenario, we measure the time to fixation in neutrally evolving populations in chaotic flows. Contrary to intuition the variation of time scales does not interpolate straightforwardly between the no-flow and well-mixe...
متن کاملAnomalous and normal diffusion of proteins and lipids in crowded lipid membranes.
Lateral diffusion plays a crucial role in numerous processes that take place in cell membranes, yet it is quite poorly understood in native membranes characterized by, e.g., domain formation and large concentration of proteins. In this article, we use atomistic and coarse-grained simulations to consider how packing of membranes and crowding with proteins affect the lateral dynamics of lipids an...
